Our comprehensive mental health services are designed to provide effective and compassionate care, helping clients regain stability and live fulfilling lives. Our approach combines evidence-based therapies, personalized treatment plans, and a supportive environment to address the distinct needs of those with Bipolar II. What is Bipolar II Disorder? Bipolar II disorder is a mental health condition characterized by recurring episodes of depression and hypomania. While hypomanic episodes are less intense than the full mania seen in Bipolar I, they can still significantly impact a person’s daily functioning, relationships, and quality of life. Depressive episodes, on the other hand, are often severe and prolonged, making it challenging to maintain balance and productivity. Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar II Disorder Understanding the symptoms of Bipolar II disorder is the first step toward seeking effective treatment. Key symptoms include: Depressive Episodes: Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, and loss of interest in activities. Hypomanic Episodes: Periods of heightened energy, impulsivity, reduced need for sleep, and increased goal-directed activity, but without the psychotic symptoms or severe impairment seen in mania. Mood Swings: Shifts between depressive and hypomanic episodes, often unpredictable and disruptive. Difficulty Maintaining Stability: Challenges in sustaining relationships, jobs, or other commitments due to mood variability. Comprehensive Treatment for Bipolar II Disorder in Colorado Our team at Wellness Treatment Center specializes in treating Bipolar II disorder through a personalized and holistic approach. We combine psychiatric care, therapeutic interventions, and lifestyle modifications to help clients achieve stability and manage their symptoms effectively. Key Components of Our Bipolar II Treatment Program Psychiatric Assessment and Medication Management: Our experienced psychiatrists conduct thorough evaluations to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. Medications such as mood stabilizers, antidepressants, or antipsychotics may be prescribed to help regulate mood and reduce symptom severity. Regular follow-ups ensure the effectiveness of treatment and address any side effects. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a cornerstone of our treatment program, helping clients identify and reframe negative thought patterns that contribute to mood swings. Clients learn practical coping strategies to manage depressive and hypomanic episodes effectively. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT focuses on improving emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and distress tolerance. This therapy is particularly beneficial for managing impulsivity and emotional dysregulation during hypomanic episodes. Group Therapy and Peer Support: Group sessions provide a safe space for clients to share their experiences, gain support, and learn from others facing similar challenges. Peer support fosters a sense of community and reduces feelings of isolation. Lifestyle and Wellness Planning: We emphasize the importance of routines, including sleep hygiene, regular exercise, and balanced nutrition. Stress management techniques, such as mindfulness and relaxation exercises, are integrated into the treatment plan. Why Choose Wellness Treatment Center for Bipolar II Disorder? A sense of impending doom or loss of control. These symptoms can mimic those of severe medical conditions, which often adds to the distress and confusion surrounding panic attacks. While they are not life-threatening, their impact on mental health and daily life can be significant. Our Approach to Treating Panic Attacks At Wellness Treatment Center, we understand that panic attacks are more than just isolated episodes—they are often linked to underlying conditions such as anxiety, trauma, or stress. Our multidisciplinary treatment programs address these root causes while providing tools to manage and prevent future episodes. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Our IOP offers a structured and supportive environment for individuals experiencing frequent or severe panic attacks. Through a combination of group and individual therapy, participants learn techniques to reduce the intensity and frequency of attacks while addressing any co-occurring mental health issues. Wellness Program: Stress management is a key component of our Wellness Program, emphasizing healthy lifestyle changes and relaxation techniques. We help clients build the foundation for long-term recovery by fostering a sense of balance and resilience. This evidence-based therapy equips individuals with practical tools to manage their anxiety and regain a sense of control. Check out our survey results from our Client Satisfaction Questionnaire! Issues that I’d known I’d had for years were addressed in this program, and I’ve finally been able to make progress with them. ”Thank you hardly seems enough to say.   I am so grateful that you have established this incredible program; it truly helped me to change my life, which has been such a gift.   I hope you know just how much this empowerment means to people like me who were feeling so lost and stuck. ”I liked knowing I had a safe and positive environment to come to each day.   I received professional treatment in a very relaxed setting.   The support from the other clients was amazing.   I am so thankful to have been referred to your program.   I’m not sure I would be around to write this evaluation, if I had not had the wonderful treatment you provided. ”Sometimes you can’t explain what you see in a person, place, or thing.   It’s just the way all of this took me to a place where nothing else could have taken me before.   Thank you for this wonderful “Program” and your compassion, support, and encouragement. ”I loved the fact that the program used modern medicine in addition to living healthier lifestyle.   The group aspect was one of the most helpful things.   It helped me to feel that I am not alone in my suffering, and that I am not crazy. ”It was nice knowing that all of you worked as a team for my true well-being. I always knew that when I had a concern or question, it was taken seriously, and I always received feedback and assistance. I never felt like “just another patient”. “The group / class setting helped so much. Learning through others’ questions and experiences was of major importance in my treatment. Thank you everyone at the Wellness Center for changing my life.   I was in an awful place when I came in almost a year ago for the first time.   You guys taught me how to live with depression and continue to work toward a healthy “value-driven” lifestyle. ” The integration of a total wellness approach, physical, mental, spiritual made me feel like a more valued person, because all my needs to reinvent myself were being met.   This program gave me all the tools and skills to be all that I could be with confidence and hope for a very healthy future. ”I liked that there were so many different people to help me in the program.   That kept it interesting and diversified.   Everyone seemed to be on the same page. ”I am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity to continue participation in the Wellness Treatment Center.   It is an outstanding program, and I really appreciate the consistent support I have received during this difficult time in my life. ”Dr. Bruno and his staff are amazing and caring.   Group therapy changed my life and helped me realize I wasn’t alone.   I became close to everyone in my class and plan on keeping in touch.   I can’t thank you enough. ”I thought the group setting and having others to share with and to hear from about similar issues was a good way for me to feel less stressed out and alienated.   It helps to connect with people, and it is good to be able to get one on one therapy if necessary.   Also, I think that the medication aspect of the treatment was well taken care of. ”The staff is warm, welcoming and very nice. The instructors are terrific. The doctors are excellent. Please keep up the great work! ”The staff is amazing! Each person has their own level of compassion that they bring to the table. ”I can’t thank everyone enough for all their help and support.   Both my wife and I have noticed significant, measurable results since I started.   My wife told me, “It’s good to have my husband back. ”  I haven’t felt this good and healthy for over three years now.   Thank you for giving me the tools I needed to get myself back. ”This program pulled together six elements for Total Wellness.   This helped me to make changes that brought me out of a deep depression to a point that I am feeling better than I have in more than a year.   I came in totally devastated after losing my job.   I left full of hope with plans for new opportunities for work, exercise, sunlight, etc.   Thank you for helping me save my life. ”Just a short note to thank you all for all you’ve done to help me navigate the stormy waters of mental illness.   It means so much to stay independent and employed.   I appreciate all the special therapies you offer at WTC; the program is very effective.   Now that I’m “back” in the real world, there are many challenges, but I do feel more equipped to handle what comes down the road.   Thanks for welcoming my need to express my faith. ”Thank you and your colleagues for the care you provide, the healing that blossoms, touching many lives and making the world a better place. ” --- ### Insurance > We accept most major insurance plans and are happy to set up a monthly payment plan for your treatment. While healthy lifestyle choices are effective for anyone wanting to feel better, they are especially helpful for those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. When these six lifestyle choices are used together consistently and specifically, the results are quite remarkable. 1. Nutrition You are what you eat, and the average American diet today is lacking in nutrition, especially in omega-3 fatty acids. To accomplish the necessary nutritional requirements for overall well-being and the anti-oxidant effects, we provide supplements as a part of the Wellness Program. 2. Exercise Besides being good for you physically, exercise also produces the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which are the “feel good” chemicals. To keep these chemicals abundant, a structured exercise plan is part of the Wellness Program. We have a personal trainer and yoga instructor who run these groups. 3. Meaningful Activity/Anti-Rumination You can often be your own worst enemy when it comes to fixating or replaying negative thoughts over and over in your mind, also known as rumination. Learning how to identify and stop the pattern of negative thinking is very powerful. Through group work and behavioral techniques, we help you become aware of when you start to brood over negative thoughts and identify potentially high-risk situations and people. We also give you practical tools and alternate activities to replace the rumination. 4. Sunlight Bright light is critical to hormone balance, energy levels, sleep regulation, and overall well-being. The program dictates light therapy with natural sunlight or light box therapy. We encourage patient's to get early morning sunlight but we can supply a light box for clients to use at home if needed. 5. Social Interaction You can often feel very isolated when you are depressed or anxious. Social connection and meaningful activity are a very important component of the Wellness Program. You’ll learn how to improve social interaction and relationships, and schedule specific action steps to engage in meaningful activity with your family, friends, and community. 6. Sleep Most Americans do not get enough sleep, and depression and anxiety often trigger sleep disturbances. The Wellness Program promotes sleep hygiene with techniques to ensure the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep every night. While these six components have been researched extensively, we closely monitor you and your results, and fine-tune the program to best meet your individual needs. --- ### Avoidance Group - Published: 2021-07-24 - Modified: 2025-01-29 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/avoidance-group/ Avoidance Group This is a drop-in support/process group that addresses avoidance patterns for anyone struggling with anxiety and depression. People have naturally gathered in groups for the purposes of safety, relationships, hunting and gathering, effectively establishing well-bonded communities. Even during western expansion, the pioneers relied on neighbors and towns for opportunities for meaningful relationships.   While today’s world is much closer geographically and electronically, it is easier than ever to feel cut off from people. Feelings of isolation feed into depression and anxiety. And the more depressed we feel, the more difficult it is to reach out to others to establish meaningful connections that will help alleviate feelings of isolation. Sometimes it seems impossible to break this cycle of isolation. The holidays can be especially difficult. Not only does it feel like everyone else is having a good time, which shines a spotlight on our feelings of isolation, but it also is a time when we often take on too much and over-commit. These negative feelings and demands may leave us feeling more drained than ever, giving us little incentive to expand our social sphere and care for our feelings of isolation and depression. Others, however, don’t seem to have any problems during the holidays. They float through their days spreading cheer and happiness, accomplishing a pile of tasks, and eventually find the perfect gift for everyone on their list. These social butterflies make it look easy even though it may not be. But there’s hope for the rest of us! There are some things we can do to help nurture our social connections and find balance in our lives during this busy and stressful time of year. Prioritize People While a thousand things demand our attention during the holidays, people are the most important. Nurturing your relationships with family and friends might be the most important thing you can do during this busy time of year. Make a list of people you want to connect with during the holidays and reach out to plan something! You’ll be glad you joined in, once you decide to do it. Your feelings of isolation will dissipate, and you’ll regain some lost energy.   Here are some ideas to get you started: Attend a party togetherSend a cardMake a phone callSend a series of cheerful textsSend a Facebook message Drive around together to view the lights at nightGet together for a holiday movie nightSkype or video chat each other Play a sport togetherHost an informal game nightVolunteer together to help a charityGo for a wintery walk togetherGrab a coffee together Engage Someone Else If being the one to organize a get-together or initiate an activity sounds too intense for you, ask your friend or family member to be the one to choose an outing from this list. Take advantage of someone else’s ability to start something fun, and then join in. People who care about you will be happy to include you and you can benefit from their energy and positive attitudes.   The holidays are a great time for nurturing social connections! However, it is important to also take some down time for ourselves so that we do not feel overwhelmed at this already stressful time of year. It is ok to say no to a party if you are feeling like you need down time. However, it is also a great time of the year to spend some extra time with your loved ones! Finding a balance is key, especially if you suffer from depression and anxiety around this time of year.   --- ### Thrive in the Sun - Published: 2019-11-12 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/thrive-in-the-sun/ - Categories: Articles When you look to nature, it seems as though all life thrives in the sun. Trees soar under the bright sky, prairie grasses wave in the wind and wildflowers dot the land. People, too, thrive in the sun. Serotonin levels skyrocket and depression begins to decrease. A surplus of Vitamin D has even been shown to keep certain diseases away! Even though it naturally synthesizes in your skin when sunlight is added, Vitamin D can be difficult to come by. About 42% of the population is Vitamin D deficient. This is because much of our lives are lived indoors. This deficit is evident in everything from a lack of energy to irritable moods to health conditions. It’s a well-known fact that sunlight is important to our health and wellbeing, but how can we fit it into our already busy day when we are on the run from sunup to sundown? As the weather changes, it becomes increasingly harder to get enough sunlight since the days get shorter and the temperature gets colder. Here are some ideas on how to make sure you have enough sunlight in your day so that you can thrive. Get More Sunlight Your eyes are key in obtaining enough sunlight to regulate your serotonin levels. Wearing sunglasses in the car may work against you. Car windows already cut up to half of the beneficial rays that could be reaching you, but when you add sunglasses you diminish the benefits of the few minutes that you are in the sun. Roll down the window, stick out an arm with your sleeve pushed up and take off your sunglasses if you can. If you’re waiting in the car for someone, this might be easier than when you’re driving. Eat lunch outdoors or have breakfast in a sunny breakfast nook. Take phone calls next to a window or step out on the deck. The longer you can be in the sun, the more Vitamin D your skin can produce and the better you may feel. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes a day as a starting point. Get a Light Box If being outside during peak sunny hours is too difficult, consider investing in a light box. Light boxes are very affordable and reaps big rewards. Spending up to 30 minutes a day in front of the light box can make a big difference in the way you feel. Try starting the lightbox a half hour after you get up. Elevating the box so it shines down on you and is directly in front of you will give you the best coverage while protecting your eyes from undue strain. If you are feeling anxious, try breathing exercises, meditating or yoga while using the light box. You may find that it curbs some of your anxiety. Light therapy has been proven to be a mild, safe form of elevating your serotonin, however, if you have a preexisting condition or an eye condition, check with your doctor before starting any light therapy regimens. Get Vitamin D Supplements Finally, if getting enough sunlight is a problem, try taking Vitamin D3 supplements. Vitamin D3 is found in oily fish, fish liver oil and egg yolks. Readily available and inexpensive, this vitamin—which is actually a hormone—can help your body in many ways. “A chemical key, it unlocks hundreds of genes that control the day-to-day functioning of your brain, heart, immune cells, bone, skin, nerves, and blood vessels,” says Dr. Stephen S. Ilardi in The Depression Cure. Taken consistently, Vitamin D supplements can help you feel better and thrive, even when sunlight is scarce. The US Institute of Medicine suggests that an average daily intake of 400-800 IU is adequate for 97. 5% of individuals. However, there are a lot of variables that can affect how much is needed for everyone. Check with your healthcare provider to find out what daily dose is needed for you. --- ### When You Feel Like Giving Up - Published: 2019-09-16 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/when-you-feel-like-giving-up/ - Categories: Articles Have you had thoughts of giving up? Do you ever want to end the pain? When these difficult thoughts keep resurfacing, it’s helpful to remember that you’re not alone. At Wellness Treatment Center of Englewood, CO, you can find ways to improve your life that can help alleviate painful feelings. Our caring staff is ready to assist you in your journey towards hope. The holidays are fast approaching, and with them come an endless list of things to do and ways to spend money. It doesn’t take long to feel overwhelmed. Many people struggle with depression and anxiety during this season. Left unchecked, these feelings can cause a crisis that could spur on thoughts of suicide. To derail that train of thought, it’s great to have a plan in place ahead of time. Here’s an easy place to start. 5 things you need to do immediately if you are struggling with dark thoughts: Reach out – have a list handy of 3 people you trust who will be there for you. Give one of them a call. Or, call the Colorado Crisis Hotline at 1-844-493-8255 to talk to a professional crisis counselor. Take a break – don’t do anything drastic right now. Distract yourself by going someplace else, talking to someone, engaging in an activity, or taking a walk. Make a promise to yourself to not act on your suicidal feelings for a week and put some distance between your thoughts and your actions. Nourish yourself – treat yourself to a healthy meal with plenty of fruits and vegetables and a lean protein. Get some sunlight to add a dose of Vitamin D. Take some vitamin and mineral supplements. Avoid drugs and alcohol – they will have the opposite effect of helping you feel better. Also, limit caffeine and sugars. Remove temptation – have a friend take away any guns, knives, pills or other objects that may be dangerous for you. Avoid music, friends and places that reinforce negative feelings and feelings of isolation. Focus on the physical – your muscles may be tight and your breathing shallow if you are struggling with suicidal thoughts. Try relaxation techniques such as stretching, meditation, yoga or massage. Or, try an upbeat cardio activity to engage your body and to distract your mind. Visualization techniques or controlled breathing exercises are another great way to calm your heartrate and to focus on the positive. Isolation is not good for you during this vulnerable time. Find ways to be with others and to reach out for help. Help is readily available from the professionals, such as the intensive outpatient program with Wellness Treatment Center, when recommended by your physician.  No matter how you are feeling, there are always people who care about you and who want to help you. Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. Remember, you are not alone. --- ### Navigating the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) - Published: 2019-09-16 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/navigating-the-family-and-medical-leave-act-fmla/ - Categories: Articles Whether you need to take a leave of absence for your own medical condition, or if you need to stay home to take care of your spouse, parent, newborn or child with a serious medical condition, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may be able to help. One of the biggest benefits of living and working in the United States is the FMLA provision that can help take the stress out of a medical emergency, a medical condition or a maternity leave of absence by protecting your job until you can return to work.   During a time of stress, this provision alleviates the dilemma of being torn between going to work and taking care of yourself or being with the person who needs you the most. However, navigating the waters of FMLA can be difficult. That’s why Wellness Treatment Center of Englewood, CO, has put together this FAQ to help. Who is eligible FMLA? If your employer is covered by FMLA, you have worked for them for 12 months (doesn’t have to be consecutive), and you have worked for a total of 1,250 hours during that 12 month period, you may be eligible for a FMLA leave of absence. Is my employer covered by FMLA?   A quick fact-check should tell you. Private employers with at least 50 employees working within a 75-mile radius are covered by FMLA, as are public agencies and school systems. Airline attendance and crews must be paid for at least 60% of their monthly guarantee and at least 504 work hours. What kinds of situations are covered by FMLA? You can take a leave of absence under FMLA for any serious health condition involving yourself, your spouse, your parent or your child. You can also take a leave of absence for a newborn baby, an adoption or a foster care placement. Common situations include: a hospital stay, a condition that requires full-time care at home, an emergency medical situation, a chronic condition that causes occasional incapacitation, an adoption, or a pregnancy. What do I get with my leave of absence? FMLA can give you up to 12 weeks of time off from work with the guarantee of getting the same or a similar job back when you return. It is a form of job protection that should help you in the event of needing to decide between work and home during a serious medical situation. However, this time is an unpaid leave of absence. Your employer will continue your insurance coverage during your time off. However, you will need to continue your normal contributions to any insurance premium during that time. The 12 weeks can be intermittent or even partial days off, if you find you can work part of the time. You will need to discuss this arrangement with your employer. If you are providing care for a seriously injured military service member, such as your spouse, you may be eligible for a 26-month leave. What about my accrued vacation days or PTO? Your paid time off (PTO), sick days or vacation days may be used during your leave of absence. To use these days as pay, you must submit the usual forms to your employer. Also, your employer has the right to use these days to pay you during your time off.   How do I notify my employer that I need a leave of absence? If possible, give your employer at least 30 days’ notice prior to your time off. If you need immediate time off due to an emergency, tell your employer as soon as you know, or by the next business day. Your employer has five days to notify you of whether or not you qualify for a leave of absence under the FMLA. If your time off is not covered by FMLA, this notice will explain why. If your time off is approved, this notice will contain the details of your leave such as how many days off you will be given, if you will need to provide a physician’s note, any PTO you have the right to use, if any PTO will be used for your leave, and any insurance continuation details. What are my confidentiality rights? You have the right to keep your medical details confidential. However, you will need to provide enough information to your employer so they will know whether or not it is covered by FMLA. If you do not provide this basic information, your leave might not be covered by FMLA.   For example, you don’t have to tell your employer your specific diagnosis, but you could tell him or her that you are needing to take time off to address your mental health.   How do I apply for FMLA? Applying for a leave of absence begins with good communication with your employer. There will be times when you will have to supply both your employer and FMLA company with documentation, so it is good to know what is required by both policies. If any certification is requested, you will have 15 calendar days to provide this. If there is any cost involved in obtaining the certification, you will be required to pay for it.   Be sure the following info is included in the document: the healthcare provider contact info; when the serious condition began; how long the condition is expected to last; appropriate medical facts such as how many doctor’s visits, symptoms, hospitalizations, treatments and referrals are needed; who is in need of care; and whether you need to take off a block of time or intermittent time off.   If there is anything missing from your documentation, you will have seven calendar days to get the additional information to your employer. If your employer feels that a second or even third opinion is needed, they can request it but they will have to pay for it. What can I expect when I return from a leave of absence? Upon returning to work, your employer must provide you with the same or nearly identical job as the one that you left. This includes substantially similar duties, responsibilities and status. It should also require the same general level of skill, effort and responsibility. You should get identical pay, including any overtime and bonuses, and identical benefits including insurances, PTO and pension. You should be able to work the same general hours at the same or a nearby location. Exceptions to the rule If you exceed the allowed days off for your leave of absence, your employer is no longer required to return you to the position you took a leave from. If you are defined as a “key employee,” or a salaried employee in the top 10% pay range of all the employees in a 75-mile radius of that worksite, you may not be guaranteed that you will be able to return to your position. Teachers also have certain exceptions, especially toward the end of the school year.   For more information or to learn how to file a complaint, visit www. dol. gov/whd/fmla --- ### 5 Activities Even Introverts Can Enjoy To Become More Engaged with Others to Alleviate Depression - Published: 2019-08-23 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/5-activities-even-introverts-can-enjoy-to-become-more-engaged-with-others-to-alleviate-depression/ - Categories: Articles By Linda Willits RxN, CNS Human connection is a key ingredient for resilience.   This can be a challenge for introverts who feel drained by the frenzy of social activities.   Not to worry, this challenge can be “ACED” with Alternatives, Credit, Encouragement and Doable Goals.   All that is required are alternative options; giving yourself credit for each step you take; self-encouragement and setting doable (reasonable) goals. Human beings are hardwired to connect.   Our ancestor’s survival often depended on protection by members of their tribe.   While loneliness and social isolation contribute to depression, social involvement boosts our brains neurotransmitters and makes us less vulnerable. (The Depression Cure, Ilardi, S. 2009. )  Introverts tend to feel relief in solitary pursuits and if depression takes hold the urge to withdraw increases.   This can create a cycle of isolation and depression which reinforce each other. As you begin your quest for activity options, begin by considering your needs.   Introverts often find social events to be over stimulating and they thrive on active thinking and self reflection.   When considering your options consider your interests and needs.   Learning activities increase your sense of competence and physical activities add the bonus of exercise.   It is always important to make choices that you find pleasant.   Pleasant events are an integral part of both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Behavioral Activation.    Adding small positives into daily routines increases happiness, decreases sadness and makes us less vulnerable to painful events.   (DBT Skills Training Manual, Linehan, M. 2015) --- ### Top 10 ways to become more physically active without a gym membership - Published: 2019-08-20 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/top-10-ways-to-become-more-physically-active-without-a-gym-membership/ - Categories: Articles The links between depression, anxiety and exercise are clear – research shows physical activity can ease symptoms of depression and anxiety and make you feel better.   How does exercise help depression and anxiety?   Releases feel-good endorphinsDecreases stress, anger and tensionBreaks the cycle of ruminationIncreases confidenceRelieves muscle tensionIncreases blood flow to the brainProvides opportunity for social interaction Despite the positive benefits- when you have depression or anxiety- exercise often seems like the last thing you want to do. And while joining a gym can be a fantastic way to get fit, it’s not the only way. There are a variety of ways to get moving that can help you get fit and feel better.   Here are 10 fun ways to get fit without a gym: Take the stairs instead of the elevator-While this is a repeated piece of advice by most health professionals, its true. This simple act can add more steps into your routine, get your heart pumping and help you burn some extra calories. Park further from the building when you go somewhere-Whether it’s a grocery store, doctors office, mall- let’s face it, we all spend extra time circling around trying to find the closest parking spot. Next time, park near the end of the lot and walk in. The time you save by driving around the lot will make up for the time walking in- plus you will add more steps into your day.   Take a walk- Taking a walk around the block is a great opportunity for some physical activity, fresh air and sunlight. You could even walk with a friend to add social connection, walk your pet, or listen to your favorite music. Walking is an easy way to get in shape because its free and something you can do pretty much anywhere. Move between TV commercials-No more sitting- you can walk, jog in place, or try this circuit: jumping jacks, lunges, high knees, push-ups and sit ups. No equipment needed- just get your body moving. Its amazing how much better you can feel physically, mentally and emotionally when you move just a few times a hour rather than sitting sedentary.  Clean your house-I know... who wants to do chores? But scrubbing bathrooms, making beds, sweeping, vacuuming, wiping countertops can be quite a workout. Plus it feels good to be getting some tasks done and have a clean living space. So you can throw on some good music and get cleaning.  Take a hike- Hiking is a great way to get your heart pumping while enjoying some fresh air in the great outdoors.  The scenery and feeling of accomplishment after your hike can be so much more satisfying than an afternoon at the gym. Join a Team or Take a Class- Sometimes dragging yourself to the gym on your own can be difficult. How about signing up for an adult sports league? Sports make a game out of working out, so you’ll get your heart rate up, burn calories, and have a good time doing it. Or sign up for a free class at the local rec center- like salsa, rumba, yoga, or rock climbing. This offers an opportunity to try something new and not be on your own with a boring gym routine.  Stand up at work- Work is a place where many of us are sedentary for hours. A stand-up desk could help change that. Standing helps increase leg strength and endurance. If your workplace isn’t a stand-up kind of environment, take a five-minute break at least once an hour to engage in some activity or walk around the building. Play video games that make you be active – Trade sedentary video games for more active ones such as Wii or Dance Dance Revolution or other games that require movement. You will still enjoy the entertainment of playing video games, but your body will be working too.  Practice Yoga at home- There are a ton of free or cheap yoga apps that you can use to guide a yoga session at home. You can even start with as little as 10 minutes. This helps you get your body moving and stretching without having to go anywhere, all you need is a yoga mat- or even on your carpet will do.   As you can see, there is plenty of opportunity to get our bodies moving and get fit throughout the day without going to a gym- it just requires some creativity and effort.  And this is sure to improve how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally. --- ### Rumination: Understanding the Link to Depression - Published: 2019-07-11 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/rumination-understanding-the-link-to-depression/ - Categories: Articles By Christine Allison, MA, LPC, NCC Both cows and humans ruminate.  When cows ruminate, they chew over and over on their cud. When humans ruminate, we mentally “chew” over and over (in other words dwell) on some negative situation, memory, or concern.   The problem with the human form of rumination is that it doesn’t solve anything. Instead, it makes us feel worse and feeds depression.  In the groundbreaking book, The Depression Cure, author Dr. Stephen Ilardi outlines 6 lifestyle changes to beat depression. However, he stresses that if people with depression continue to ruminate, they will stay depressed even if they make all the other changes he recommends.   Does rumination feed the cycle of depression? Rumination revs up the brain’s stress response circuits and this can trigger a full-blown episode of depression. Once someone is depressed, rumination feeds the cycle of depression by: prolonging and enhancing the negative thinking associated with depression, and amplifying negative emotions. Rumination interferes with good problem-solving. It causes people to withdraw and to become less active.  When rumination becomes a habit, people become much less connected with others.  And then staying inside, becoming less active and becoming less socially connected all feed the cycle of depression. Recognize the symptoms Because of rumination’s causal role in precipitating and maintaining depression, it is critical that people who are prone to depression learn how to recognize and reduce rumination. Because the human mind is a problem solving machine, rumination can be difficult to recognize.  When ruminating, our minds may convince us that what we are thinking about is really important and we need to keep thinking about it to solve the problem of the distress we are feeling.  However, by definition, rumination is not productive and is not problem-solving.   What is the difference between problem-solving and ruminating?   When problem-solving, you think about something only long enough to make progress or to solve it.  When ruminating, you think over a problem again and again in a way that doesn’t lead anywhere. To determine whether you are ruminating or problem-solving, try this: The Two-Minute Rule for Recognizing Rumination Once you think you might be ruminating, continue on for two minutes.   Then, stop and ask yourself the following three questions: Have I made any progress toward solving a problem? Do I understand something about a problem (or my feelings about it) that I haven’t understood before? Do I feel less self-critical or less depressed than before I started thinking about this? Unless the answer to one of these questions is a clear yes, most likely you are ruminating! In the Wellness Treatment Center program, we help our participants gain control of rumination by applying anti-rumination strategies, by increasing social connections and by becoming more active and engaged with life.   --- ### 3 Ways Exercise Can Cure the Blues - Published: 2019-04-15 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/3-ways-exercise-can-cure-the-blues/ - Categories: Articles We all know that feelings are fickle. When you’re depressed or anxious, it’s hard to summon the interest in creating a well-rounded diet. Gathering the energy to prepare healthy meals for yourself can seem like an insurmountable task. It’s much easier to snack on nutritionally-void fun foods, or grab some calorie-laden fast food. At Wellness Treatment Center in Englewood, CO, we know that good nutrition is essential for healthy living and we encourage good nutritional choices. How Nutrition Helps Increased energy – eating the right foods can mean the difference between you having a lethargic day, where all you want to do is nap, and having a brisk, productive day. Improved mental clarity – eating well can help you think clearly and avoid the hazards of brain fog caused by poor nutrition. Improved immune system – antioxidants have been known to boost your immune system. With the help of appropriate nutritional supplements, you can enjoy fewer colds and illnesses. Improved mental health – depression and anxiety symptoms can be lessened with an upswing in brain chemicals, such as serotonin or norepinephrine. These chemicals are related to moods and can be positively affected with a nutrition and dietary supplement plan. What We Need to Eat With the average American diet seriously lacking in nutrition, it’s not hard to find areas to improve in even seemingly healthy people’s meals. If you would like to see improvements in your mood, emotions and energy levels, consider eating a diet rich in the following: Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Avocados, salmon, sardines, flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, tofu, navy beans and brussel sprouts are all foods rich in Omega-3 which is crucial for treating depression. In addition, fish oil supplements can help you achieve the amount of Omega-3 that your body needs. Vitamin D3 – Cheese, egg yolks, some fortified milk and juice, beef liver, salmon or trout all have some Vitamin D3, but supplements and sunshine may be required to get enough in your system. Vitamin B – Spinach, asparagus, broccoli, fish, clams, chicken, whole grains, brown rice, soybeans, black beans, lentils, garbanzo beans, oranges, grapefruit, peas, avocados, sunflower seeds, peanuts, almonds and eggs are rich in Vitamin B. Fruits and Vegetables – work toward achieving the 5-a-Day goal, starting with fruits and vegetables added to your breakfast. Water – find a way to measure how much water you drink so you can get in the habit of drinking 8 to10 of 8 oz. glasses of water each day. Protein – choose lean meats, yogurt, nuts, beans, tofu, cheese, fish and lentils as good sources of protein. Supplements – amino acids, magnesium, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, selenium, Vitamin D3, folate, iron, iodine, Omega-3 and zinc are all supplements that your Wellness Treatment Center provider may prescribe for you. Wishing there was an easier way? Even if you’ve bought health insurance many times, the terminology and procedures can be confusing. Here are the basics: 1. What is a deductible? A deductible is how much you pay out of your own pocket for most medical services before your insurance kicks in.   For example, if your plan has a $1,000 deductible, your insurance won’t pay any bills until you’ve spent this amount. (Note: Deductibles may not apply to some preventive services such as wellness visits and vaccines. ) BE AWARE: There are many deductibles that can range into several thousand dollars. 2. What is coinsurance? Coinsurance is your share of any claim for a medical service. For instance, you might pay 20% of the negotiated cost of your service and your insurance pays the remaining 80%. You start paying your plan’s coinsurance once you’ve met your deductible. Often, the lower your monthly premiums are, the higher your coinsurance will be. 3. What are premiums? Premiums are the payments you make to maintain your policy. 4. What is a copay? For some services, an insurer may require you to pay your healthcare provider a copay along with what the insurance will pay. This copay typically consists of a flat fee. For example, many policies have a $30 to $40 copay for each doctor’s visit. Copays are typically higher for visits to specialists or emergency rooms. Your plan can require you to pay copays and coinsurance. Copays are often necessary when purchasing prescription medications. If you see a doctor regularly for a chronic health condition and are on medication, look for a plan that has low copays for those visits and for your prescriptions. 5. What is the Out-of-Pocket Maximum? The out-of-pocket maximum is the maximum amount an individual will have to pay annually. Once this threshold is reached, insurance pays 100% for the remainder of the year. Ready to find some insurance? Now that you understand these important terms, you have a starting point. When you compare health insurance companies, start by comparing deductibles, coinsurance, premiums, copays and out-of-pocket maximums. By making a simple graph, you should be able to see at a glance which policy will be best for your needs. --- ### Break free from emotions - Published: 2019-02-20 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/break-free-from-emotions/ - Categories: Articles Have you ever felt emotionally stuck? Have people been frustrated with you because you couldn’t change the way you looked at something? How often do you react to common situations with anger or blow ups? Do you eat to try to feel better? Do you find it impossible to control your emotions? Do you lean on substances to distract you? Do you “beat yourself up” mentally each time you feel you’ve failed to live up to your expectations? Good News Don’t give up! It may feel like you’re condemned to live out your life in never-ending cycles of overwhelming thoughts, followed by poor behavioral responses, followed by remorse, but there is a way to break free. These rigid thinking patterns that lead to negative behaviors can be rerouted to become something positive. One of the first steps is changing common negative thoughts with positive ones. If you often think “anger is bad and therefore I’m not a good person because I’m angry,” you might want to try looking more objectively at anger as just one of many emotions that everyone feels that is neither good nor bad. Tell yourself instead, “I feel angry but it’s ok because it’s just a feeling and it does not define me. ” Find a Turning Point At Wellness Treatment Center in Englewood, CO,  Dialectical Behavior Therapy  (DBT) is one part of our intensive outpatient program that can offer you an alternative to being enslaved to your emotions. We’ve seen remarkable changes in people that have empowered them to live life in a completely different way. The key to success is maintaining a collaborative relationship with your therapist and personal support team. Having a base of support is going to help you as you work through the program and transition back into your community. You Are Stronger Than You Think Actually, you have talents and strengths that are uniquely your own. A starting place in gaining freedom over emotions is identifying and recognizing those strengths. Replacing negative self-talk with a positive focus on your strengths can go a long way in helping you feel strong enough to confront the difficult issues you face each day. The 4 Components of DBT Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has four basic skills. Mastering these four skills takes time, positive reinforcement and a support team. But once they become second nature, you can enjoy having an arsenal of learned coping skills to use whenever you need them. Mindfulness – as in the example of anger above, this skill teaches you to look more objectively at emotions, to classify them, and to make good choices about how you will handle them. No longer will you be tied to a knee-jerk reaction to each situation. Emotion regulation – by building skills to identify and properly respond to emotions, you can insulate yourself from the effects of being overpowered by them. As you gain successes in this area, you can enjoy a heightened sense of enjoyment from life. Interpersonal effectiveness – this skill might take you by surprise, but it is a key component of DBT practices. If you’ve ever had trouble saying “no,” or if you’ve wondered how to act in certain social situations, this skill can help you navigate the murky waters of relationships like a pro. Your self-respect and your relationships can both remain intact when you learn how to be effective in interacting with others. Distress tolerance – when that familiar feeling of overwhelming powerlessness takes hold, this skill can come in handy. Practicing crisis survival skills will increase your ability to tolerate high levels of emotion. In turn, you may feel more empowered and successful, which will help you as you cope with painful situations. This skill teaches you to accept difficult circumstances while understanding that you are not approving of them. With the help of these four skills and the support you receive from therapy, you can enjoy a freedom from emotions that you may have never known before. --- ### Break the Vicious Cycle with Behavioral Activation - Published: 2019-02-13 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/break-the-vicious-cycle-with-behavioral-activation/ - Categories: Articles Did your mom ever say, “You can’t see the forest for the trees? ” Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in our circumstances and negative feelings that it becomes overwhelming and we can’t see a way out. And depression and anxiety only make everything feel harder. So, as we work to manage our difficult feelings, we may find ourselves engaging in more avoidant activities—such as sleeping past noon each day or binge eating—to temporarily numb, suppress or avoid the distress. Indeed, it does make us feel better but only for a moment. The short term relief ultimately does not outweigh the long term consequences. The more we engage in avoidant patterns, the worse we feel. It creates a vicious cycle that is hard to break. You might find yourself saying that you will change your behavior when you feel better or are more motivated like, “Tomorrow I will get up early and go work out. ” But then the next morning you find you feel the same way so you engage in the same pattern of staying in bed. Individuals struggling with depression and anxiety know this cycle all too well. You may refuse a chance to hang out with friends and stay home and watch TV because you worry you don’t fit in. The isolation, then, can make you feel worse about yourself and can make it feel even harder to go out with friends the next time. Thus, the pattern continues. The depression loop is a vicious cycle that can seem impossible to break. The feelings that feed the detrimental choices are reinforced by the negative outcome of those choices. But don’t worry, there is a way out of this loop, but it can seem counterproductive at first. The Solution Behavioral Activation is a model taught in one of the groups offered at Wellness Treatment Center, Englewood, CO. We can help you see the forest and not just the trees. This therapy begins with becoming aware of the cycle you are stuck in. What do you feel and what do you do in response to that feeling in hopes of making it go away? And is it working? This awareness creates space for change. Identifying new, positive behaviors that you can do regardless of how you feel, will ultimately improve your mood. This can feel very difficult at first, because the avoidant patterns become so familiar. But you can become unstuck by taking action today. Starting to practice the behaviors that bring you closer to your goals of feeling healthier and happier—despite how you feel now—will change your life. This is not a “quick fix” approach, but it does lead to a long term sustainable change. Here’s the trick: set up a reward system for yourself to give you something tangible to work towards. Just “becoming healthier” is a great goal but very hard to measure in the short term. However, “buying new gym shoes” is a tangible goal that you can see and touch that can be used to motivate yourself. And remember to commend your progress – there are no big or small steps. Every time you do something different (getting up an hour earlier, setting a timer to clean your house, or pay one bill) you are making tremendous progress toward breaking out of the cycle. The Support An action plan is needed to conquer these negative behaviors. This can work best with someone helping you. If you have a support person to talk to, you will have a better chance of breaking free of this vicious cycle that is ultimately fueling and reinforcing depression and anxiety. This is where Wellness Treatment Center comes in. With the support of the groups, psychiatrist, wellness elements such as: supplements, exercise and stress management, you can start to create goals that you can stick to. With support and accountability, you can break out of the vicious cycle of depression and anxiety. --- ### #1 Tip to Beat the Blues - Published: 2019-01-14 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/1-tip-to-beat-the-blues/ - Categories: Articles Songs have been written about the blues, but there’s nothing alluring about being mired in a feeling of depression when everyone else seems to be busy socializing and having so much fun. If you’re feeling down emotionally during the New Year, there might be one easy solution to try at home that could help you regain some feelings of contentment. According to the providers at Wellness Treatment Center, Englewood, CO, beating the blues could be as simple as developing some good sleep habits through an individualized sleep therapy program. Sleep therapy is an effective technique that can help elevate moods, increase productivity and safeguard health in people who have been struggling with depression. How does sleep affect health? According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, sleep helps support healthy brain function by refreshing the mind, eliminating unnecessary details and preparing for the new day to come. Sleep helps you learn new things, be creative, focus attention and make decisions. Sleep is also critical for emotional well-being, helping you handle your emotions, adapt to changes and solve problems. Having enough sleep can help you handle stress in life. Physically, sleep helps your body repair itself and heal as well as boost needed hormone levels. It supports a healthy immune system, keeping viruses and disease at bay. It can also help you perform better during the day, increasing your physical safety. Finally, getting good sleep is crucial for achieving an ideal weight. What are some good sleep habits? If getting enough sleep is difficult for you, try developing some carefully-crafted habits that may help you get the 7-10 hours recommended for most adults. Starting with good sleep hygiene, it isn’t hard or expensive to create the perfect atmosphere for sleeping. Here are some suggestions for improving your sleep habits: Have a set time – going to sleep and getting up at the same time each day can help your body’s sleep and wake rhythms become more reliable. It can also ensure you get the full hours needed to reach your goal. Go dark – use lined curtains and blinds to create as dark an atmosphere as possible. If a nightlight is needed, choose a dim one or put it in the hallway. Limit naps – try to change any bad habits of sleeping during the day and tossing-and-turning during the night by limiting naps to 15 minutes once a day, or eliminate them altogether. Get sleepy – spend the last hour before bed doing something quiet like reading, listening to music or talking with the family. Avoid fast-paced movies or computer time. Try taking a hot bath to relax. If you can’t clear your mind, write down things you can’t forget, then set it aside and forget it until tomorrow. Go decaf – since the effects of caffeine can last for hours, don’t drink coffee or caffeinated tea or soda in the late afternoon or evening. Watch the chocolate, as well. Stay cool – a cooler bedroom has shown to be more conducive to sleep. Add another blanket if you prefer. Get exercise – taking a walk each day, cleaning or exercising can all be good ways to keep your body feeling healthy and to be tired at bedtime. Getting sunlight will help, too. Go light – avoid heavy meals before bed, stay away from alcohol and ditch nicotine. All of these can interfere with a good sleep cycle. Keep the bedroom simple – use the bed only for sleeping to train your brain to be prepared to sleep when you go there. Watching TV, reading books, texting or using your laptop should be banned from your bed. Keep your cell phone facedown to eliminate light and notifications that will stimulate your brain. White noise – use a fan, a white noise machine, a humidifier or an air purifier for relaxing sounds to sleep by. Relaxation techniques – find some great relaxation techniques to try if you can’t fall asleep or if you wake up and can’t get back to sleep. If you’re feeling stuck emotionally, give some of these sleep tips a try and see if you can shake some of those downer feelings that are keeping you from feeling good. Keep a log of what works for you and what doesn’t, so you can quickly develop the key sleeping habits that are going to make a positive difference in your life.   --- ### The Beauty of Boundaries - Published: 2019-01-01 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/the-beauty-of-boundaries/ - Categories: Articles Many people expect life to be joyous and wonderful, but when difficult people are involved, stress can skyrocket. Handling demands at work, juggling financial concerns, dealing with feelings of loneliness or grief, and encountering toxic people can all be stressors that can threaten a person’s sense of well-being. Overloaded with stressors, preexisting conditions can grow into unmanageable problems. Individuals who struggle with depression or anxiety may find that symptoms intensify when toxic people are present. The magic of boundaries This is why setting boundaries for yourself is so crucial for your well-being.   You don’t have to experience days when you lose control, feel more anxious, feel depressed, or find yourself in conflict with family or acquaintances. Conflicts shouldn’t result in you being taken advantage of, manipulated, or abused by toxic people. How do I set boundaries? So how do you set boundaries with others–especially your relatives with whom you may spend time throughout the year? Pro Tip: First you must understand that you are allowed to have boundaries with your family and friends. It’s not “wrong. ” You may not know it, but you teach people how to treat you by creating boundaries. Boundaries are the lines you draw that teach people how far they can push a situation before you will no longer take it. If there is a person or situation that is jeopardizing your mental health and well-being, then that is a sign that you need to do something different. You must first decide what your limits are by determining when you feel your best as opposed to what situations exacerbate your anxiety, depression, and stress. Paying attention and being mindful of your thoughts and feelings can help you be aware of what boundaries you need to set or when you may need to reconsider a decision. For example, if your stomach clenches when your friend invites you to a party, you may need to think about it some more before automatically saying “yes. ” This is a way to take care of yourself. Pro Tip: Knowing your bottom line and understanding why you are setting a certain limit can help you stick to it. When you are setting boundaries with others, you need to make sure that they understand what the limits are. You can do this by being clear and direct with them rather than trying to soften things. Remaining calm can also make it easier for you to express your reasons for setting boundaries and may better allow for the other person to understand and respect them without becoming defensive. For instance, if you do not want to get into the same conflict with your mother about cooking when you come to visit, then change the dynamics. Offer to bring a side dish and not engage in the tradition of cooking dinner together in the kitchen. It’s human nature to want to put off difficult things, but it is actually much easier to just be direct and honest up front. Pro Tip: It is important to let others know that you will not allow yourself to be treated in certain ways anymore, and if they want a relationship with you, they will have to live within your boundaries. More coping techniques If you find yourself overwhelmed by stress or other negative feelings and cannot explain what you need, take a breather for your own mental health. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone–without distractions–may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do and to go back to interacting with others. Find some things that reduce stress such as clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. Some practical options may include: taking a walk, doing meditation, journaling, taking 10 deep breaths, listening to soothing music, getting some sunlight, finding a way to exercise or reading a part of a book. Throughout the year, these coping techniques are important to integrate into your routine for your own self-care. Any time you have a trying person in your life, you can exercise boundaries. And any time you are stressed or worried, you can take a break and do something to feel more relaxed. Just take care of yourself When you learn to say “no” and you acknowledge that you can’t control or satisfy everyone, you save your energy to better be able to take care of yourself and to connect with the people that matter. In addition, the unhealthy people in your life who have been pushing your buttons may also start to see that these triggers don’t work anymore. Setting boundaries clearly, calmly and with love means that you affirm your love for the person, but you also make it clear that you will no longer tolerate being treated badly or be in situations that jeopardize your mental health. --- ### Alleviating Suffering through Perspective Shifting - Published: 2018-12-13 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/alleviating-suffering-through-perspective-shifting/ - Categories: Articles Alleviating Suffering through Perspective Shifting By Christine Allison, MA, LPC, NCC 3 Simple Tricks for Finding Answers to Life’s Problems This past weekend, I was assembling a piece of furniture that I had ordered online. You know that kind of furniture – it shows up in a box in a bunch of pieces with hard-to-follow directions, and it is usually a painfully slow assembly process. My partner had already tried assembling it last weekend and had given up, stating that the instructions were incorrect. Actually, he used much more colorful language than that. He was right. The images in the instructions did not match the actual pieces, especially relating to the location of the pre-drilled holes.   By shifting my perspective away from the pictures in the instructions and looking at the actual pieces of particle board, I was able to see a way to attach the pieces that he had not seen. It was a good reminder about how helpful it can be to shift our focus.   How Can I Shift My Focus? When we are psychologically stuck, struggling or suffering, shifting our focus can be just the prompt we need to find a new direction. A new perspective can be a lifesaver. There are lots of ways to shift our perspective. For example, ask yourself these questions: What would you say to a dear friend struggling with the same issue?  How would someone you deeply admire handle the situation?  How would that person likely respond to this problem?    Often we have helpful wisdom inside of us. It is just a matter of accessing it.    Try This Method Here is a brief visualization and journaling exercise that can help you shift perspective and access the wise and compassionate person inside of you. Bring to mind some area of your life in which you are currently stuck or struggling or not living in the way you want to live. Write a brief description of this issue. Then, close your eyes and imagine yourself 10 years from now. Imagine yourself as the best possible version of yourself. You are wiser and kinder. You are living a life that is fulfilling and meaningful. Take a moment to connect with this future image of yourself. See yourself and sense how it feels to be a wiser, gentler person. Now, imagine what this best possible version of yourself would say to you today about this issue with which you are struggling. What wisdom would you give to yourself? Hear in your mind what future-you would say to yourself today.   Write in your journal whatever helpful advice and gentle encouragement you would offer to yourself. Take It to the Next Step Journaling can be a helpful tool to draw wisdom from inside yourself and to find answers to problems. Here’s another journaling exercise that you can try. Write the answers to these questions: What is the probability that you might use this type of perspective-shifting again to help yourself through something that is difficult in the present moment?   What could help you remember to shift your perspective?   In what situations might perspective shifting be helpful for you?   What are other ways you could shift your perspective? Find Help from Others Sometimes, it is hard to find the answers within ourselves. Talking with others can be a great way to organize our thoughts, draw out wisdom and chart a new path. At Wellness Treatment Center, professionals are ready to speak with you to help you find a fresh focus.  Contact us for an appointment and let us help you learn to shift perspective and find the answers you need. --- ### A Different Way of Experiencing Thoughts - Published: 2018-12-13 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/a-different-way-of-experiencing-thoughts/ - Categories: Articles By Christine Allison, MA, LPC, NCC Have you ever been so absorbed in your thoughts that you lose track of the world around you? Do you sometimes get so caught up in the intensity of your thoughts that it feels like you are actually experiencing something that you are really just thinking about?   In ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), these are examples of what we call “fusion” with our thoughts. Think of two pieces of metal that are fused together. They are stuck, welded, melded together – there is no space between them. We can experience our thoughts this way. Sometimes there is no space between us and our thoughts. We are consumed by them and immersed in them. In ACT language, we are “fused” with our thoughts.    How Does Fusion Work? When we are fused with our thoughts, we see the world through the lens of our thoughts, as if our thoughts were sunglasses we are looking through. If the lens of our thoughts is a cheery color, this tends not to be a problem. But if the lens of our thoughts is a gloomy color (a default for many and especially for those struggling with depression and anxiety), this can create unnecessary suffering and keep us stuck in negative patterns.   Learn to Defuse The ACT skill of “defusion” helps us change our relationship with our thoughts. Defusion enables us to get some space from our thoughts so that instead of being stuck inour thoughts and seeing the world through the lensof our thoughts, we can take a step back and look atour thoughts.  When we look atour thoughts, we see them for what thoughts actually are – words and images that pop up in our minds.   Our thoughts are not real in the same way that a 3-dimensional object is real. When we are defused from our thoughts, we see that they may or may not be true and that they may or may not be helpful.    Try this Trick A very useful question to ask about a difficult or painful thought is: “Is this a helpful thought for what is important to me right now? ” If the answer is “No, this is not a helpful thought,” then we can let that thought pass on by like a car driving past on the street. We don’t need to stop the car (thought) and examine it or engage with it. And we certainly don’t need to jump in the car (thought) and go with it where it is going. We can let it just pass on by and refocus our attention and energy on something more important – something that matters to us in a much deeper way than some random, unhelpful thought! REALLY??? - Published: 2017-04-05 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/breakfast-the-most-important-meal-of-the-day-really/ - Categories: Articles We’ve all heard it – the importance of eating breakfast every day – whether you are an elite athlete, someone overweight and trying to lose weight, or a teenager who likes to sleep in.   Still many people skip breakfast every day using every excuse from “I’m just not hungry in the mornings” to “I don’t have time. ”  So what is the “real deal” on the importance of breakfast? Eating within two hours of waking up helps your body metabolize glucose (blood sugar).   Maintaining proper glucose levels has significant effects on one’s overall health and may help prevent diabetes and weight gain.   Essentially, when you don’t eat breakfast you are fasting for 15-20 hours.   As a result, you’re not producing the enzymes needed to metabolize fat.   Also, some people find themselves overeating and binging at lunch time or later in the day to compensate for not eating breakfast. Research on eating breakfast and its overall effect on health is actually complicated than the media would have you believe.   There are some people who can skip breakfast and still lose weight.   But the Wellness Treatment Center believes that eating breakfast is an important part of the six elements program.  Jump start your day with morning sunlight and breakfast fuel to keep you feeling calmer yet more energized, and more focused and able to concentrate! The best type of breakfast is lean protein and fiber.   You don’t have to sit down to eggs, bacon, and toast every day.   Instead, have a smoothie with yogurt and fruit.   Put some protein powder in your coffee.   How about a banana with some peanut butter?   And there is nothing wrong with eating a bit of that left-over brown rice and chicken for breakfast.   Breakfast food does not have to be traditional breakfast food.   Just think about fueling your body with wholesome food – stay away from the processed foods and the sugary donuts!   Keep the donuts as a rare to never treat.  Your body and brain will love you for it! --- ### Sleep Hygiene - Published: 2016-05-20 - Modified: 2023-05-26 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/sleep-hygiene/ - Categories: Articles We all know the value of a good night’s sleep.   We have all experienced the benefits. Medical research has extolled the virtue of good sleep for many years.   So what’s the problem?   The problem is that many people just cannot get a good night’s sleep and become chronically sleep deprived.   Life stressors, bad environments, and mental and physical illness can throw a regular sleep routine into quite a tailspin.   When this happens people often develop bad habits that lead to more and more difficulty with sleep.   Fortunately there is something called sleep hygiene that can help you get back to a good sleep routine.   Try to follow as many of these strategies as possible, and over time you will likely see your sleep improve. --- ### FOOD AND MOOD: What’s the Link? - Published: 2015-09-03 - Modified: 2023-04-27 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/food-and-mood-whats-the-link/ - Categories: Articles FOOD AND MOOD: What’s the Link? Follow some of these simple tips and notice any impact on your mood. Most people have an understanding of the link between diet and physical health. But what you eat and when you eat can have a dramatic impact on mood and other behavioral health problems.   Think about how you feel after you’ve had too much caffeine or have indulged your sweet tooth.   Sometimes that Big Mac tastes really good while you’re eating it but afterwards you feel the negative consequences. 1. Eat breakfast!  Breakfast eaters have a lowered risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.   Be creative.   You don’t have to cook yourself a huge meal.   Have someyogurt or a banana with peanut butter.   Make a dozen hard boiled eggs to keep on hand.   Or a smoothie with fruit.     What a way to start the day! 2. Hydrate!  Even slight dehydration increases the body’s stress hormones.   Flavor your water with lemon, lime, cucumber, or a splash of your favorite fruit juice.     Keep the coffee for the mornings and the soda for special occasions. 3. Snack!  Yes you read that correctly – eat a snack at least every 3 or 4 hours.   The best snacks will include some protein and fresh fruit or vegetable.   Reach for the low fat string cheese, a few nuts, and some apple slices. 4. Do not restrict!  If you starve yourself you will end up binging and feeling guilty.   Indulge once in a while and stay fueled. --- ### Exercise – A Natural Antidepressant - Published: 2014-10-12 - Modified: 2023-04-28 - URL: https://wellnesstreatmentcenter.com/essant/ - Categories: Articles Exercise – A Natural Antidepressant When you are dealing with anxiety or depression the last thing you feel like doing is exercising.   But if you do it, it can make a huge difference in how you feel.   And the mood boosting benefits can start just 5 minutes into a moderate workout.   Everyone knows the physical health benefits associated with regular exercise, but did you know it can also improve your mood?   Working out on a regular basis can help decrease depression and anxiety as well as help prevent it from returning in the future.   People who have recovered from depression are less likely to suffer a relapse if they exercise regularly. How does it work?   For one thing exercise stimulates the release of endorphins – “feel good” brain chemicals.   These neurotransmitters are involved in producing a sense of well-being as well as treating pain.   Exercise also increases body temperature and improves circulation which can facilitate a sense of relaxation as well as improve attention and concentration.   Recent research has found that regular workouts might help people with anxiety become less likely to panic when they experience “fight or flight” sensations.   Exercise in some ways is like exposure therapy and people learn to associate the symptoms of increased heart rate, perspiration, etc. with safety instead of danger. Grow or Decay?   You make the choice. We all know the physical health benefits of regular exercise like the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, and diabetes.   But exercise also benefits your body at the cellular level.   Your body is made up of trillions of cells that live for only a few hours, days, weeks or months at time.   Every day your body replaces 1% of its cells.   So you have a brand new body every 3 months!   You get the make the choice about whether your new cells come in strong or weak.   If you exercise the cells come in strong but if you are sedentary the cells decay.   When you exercise your muscles release substances that travel in your blood stream and tell your cells to grow.   Sedentary muscles send out decay signals.   Our bodies are designed to move.   This is true whether you are in your 20’s or in your 90’s.   Most adults can double their leg strength within 3 months of starting to exercise.   You can also reduce your risk of dying from a heart attack by 75% – 80% just by exercising.   So make the choice, grow or decay. Walking for Health Walking is one of the easiest ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.   You can do it alone, with other people, or with your dog.   You can take a long walk or a short walk.   Be creative.   Park at the far end of the parking lot when you go to the bank or grocery store.   Take the stairs instead of the elevator.   Do a lap around your block or your building at lunch time.  One of the easiest ways to track your walking is to strap on a pedometer.   It will track every step you take and provide you with immediate feedback on your activity level.   Create a contest with a group of friends or co-workers to see who takes the most steps. Gear and Weather Make sure you have a good set of walking shoes or sneakers.   You want proper arch support, a firm heel, and soles that are thick yet flexible.   Wear comfortable clothing.   If you walk in the evening always consider safety by walking with a friend and/or wearing bright clothing.   Don’t let the weather stop you.   Grab an umbrella for the rain, your parka for the snow, and sunscreen for those hot sunny days.   Be cautious in icy conditions and consider walking at the mall or doing an indoor work-out when snow and ice are treacherous. Burn calories The amount of calories you burn while walking is largely determined by your weight and the distance you walk.   A good rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile for a 180 lb. person and 65 calories per mile for a 120 lb. person.   Don’t worry too much about speed.   Focus on distance.   But as you get more fit, try to increase your speed to a 13 minute mile and you will burn even more calories.   Your legs will also be strong and beautiful! ---
